Your smart for changing them. I am changing them with mine intact. The factory service manual states to replace this piece everytime the trim is removed. Its listed as a "one time use" item. I just ignored that step and the a pillar trim is vibrating just enough to cause alittle noise. fig...

My 2014 9C1 trunk button is active on both doors ALL the time. In the TSB's for the caprice it does show trunk release as a configurable option through sps programming. There's got to be a way to program it either way with an MDI. My build sheet shows ignition controlled trunk release so I dont know...

In response to your post about the a pillar airbag there is indeed an curtain airbag behind the a pillar trim. I work full time unfitting police cars and wiring is frequently done right by airbags. Just make sure you route the wires behind the air bag which is rolled up and taped with a tin masking ...
