Why does DOD AFM cause problems?...etc

Post by v8suprcapric »

Been reading all around and can't find out "why"...so a couple parts to this question, first obviously is why does DOD AFM cause problems? And does it only cause problems if it's being activated often? I always drive in manual mode and it never comes on, so am I prolonging the life of my engine?

I believe it's the design of the lifter, so keeping it in manual mode likely won't prolong the life. Most people just delete it rather than driving around in manual mode, so I don't think you're going to find any examples of people doing that for the life of the vehicle. Even if you did, one or two or even 10 people wouldn't be enough to definitively say that driving around in manual mode will prevent the DOD problems. DOD delete is cheap insurance.

Has it been verified that (with stock programming) running in either Sport or Manual overrides AFM?

I only know I've never seen mine come out of 8cyl mode when I drive in manual, which is 100% of the time (well maybe 99.9999999%, my initial 20' of driving when I pull out of my parking space cause I have to get out and close the gate is in regular drive mode  )
I always have my DIC set to the screen showing avg mpg/cyclinder mode and it's always in 8 cylinder mode, even coasting down a hill on the freeway in 6th gear getting "99.9 mpg". And when I first got the car I was driving in D and Sport and the change between cyclinder modes was obvious audibly.

CORRECTION: I see that occasionally it does drop into 4cyl mode in manual mode.

Seems like below or above 1800 rpms it never goes 4, but if I sit at 1800 for 2-3 seconds it switches into 4
