engine temps??

Post by cerbomark »

This is the first I have had my car in 70 degree plus weather and ran it hard (85+ MPH) for an hours or so. I never check the coolant temps but just did so by accident and saw 240 Degrees. Seemed kinda high for 70 degree outside temps. All winter I saw 190 mostly. I assume its normal. No HOT ENGINE warning on dash as indicated in booklet.

I believe the 11's I have run around the 205F range. If my wife had the scan tool with her I would have her check hers and see what it does running 85+ from Orlando to Houston tomorrow in 85 to 90 degree weather. She will only shut it down for fuel every 350 miles.
I am assuming you are looking at the water temp with a scan tool and 240F is probably pass the boiling point of the coolant under pressure. I would see what the engine temp looks like after the car has been sitting all night and compare it to the outside temp reading on the AC and go into engineering mode and take a look at the trans temp. The readings should be close to each other.

I have water temp in the dash oem. no overheating symptoms.
Once I got off highway temps lowered to around 190. I just thought a big v8 would run cooler. I have a 2.0 turbo WRX that always runs hot in the heat because of the type of engine.
I ll have to re check on the next run. Maybe I looked at something wrong.
No engineering mode on my 2016.

If you can get a hold of scan tool, take look at the coolant temp and see if it goes up as much as the dash gauge. The gauges on my 11's don't seem to move much when it gets up to operating temp. They are only a hot and cold gauge, no degrees. Does it get up to operating temp pretty quickly according to the dash gauge? You could have a thermostat that is getting flaky and a scan tool should show the flaw.

240 seems way too hot. I log data every time I drive my 2011, and coolant temps usually stay around 200 plus or minus 5 degrees. It hits about 210 occasionally, but that's usually in the hot summer with the AC on in stop and go traffic with high IATs.

I did what someone suggested and started cold in the garage (60-65 Degrees) and the coolant gauge started at 66 and was at 90 in less than one minute. I m thinking the gauge isn t that accurate. Don t currently have a scan tool.
I m doing the same2 hour drive tomorrow. I ll take the Caprice and recheck my numbers.

These engines warm up pretty fast. While the 'C' to 'H' 'temperature' labels on the factory gauge, they do seem to display whatever the relative temperatures the factory deems appropriate. I'm assuming that the middle of the gauge is about 210, since that's what the gauge shows on our Tahoe. Driving around in the Tahoe in the heat of the day with the A/C going, the Tahoe will get a bit over 210, probably running at about 220-230, but not sure. We haven't driven around with the OBDII analyzer app running.

Anyway, starting the Caprice, or Tahoe, setting all the settings we'll use when driving, and driving to the end of our 100' driveway, I notice that the needle is about halfway between the cold and mid-gauge already. In the summer time, the needle will be in the middle of the gauge on both vehicles by the time we've driven less than a couple of minutes.

Update original post/. Did the same several hour drive today. Had the coolant gauge on all the time. At 70 degrees and running 75-85 for an hour it only showed 187-190 (what it should). Then come off ramp to light and ran up to 212 at the highest, and then upon driving again went right back to 190. Then 55 MPH it ran 190. So now I m confused from my first post where it ran so high on the same road and conditions. ????
Like above post, it hits 190 with a few short mins..

that sounds about right. Did the cooling fan recall go all the way to 2016?
