A look at what lurks under the hood of the V6 Caprice

I decided that enough time had passed in this section and that someone should post SOMETHING in here. So..... I found a picture of a 2013 V6 Caprice engine and decided to put it up.

Compared to our L77's, this looks to me like it's a lot more cluttered and not quite as orderly a presentation under the engine bay. But, it gets the job done with 300+ hp so guess I can't complain. For some reason though the old L99 V8 stuffed in some of the 94-96 B-bodies comes strongly to mind when I think of this motor. Sacrifice to the bean counters watching fuel economy....

Without further delay.... I give you the 2013 V6 Caprice!

Ah memories. Talk about cluttered, I remember getting the oil changed and the mechanic complaining about how there is a wiring harness or some sorta loom that run right across where the oil filter cap goes. That V6 took alot of oil too, to the tune of 7 quarts, IIRC.

And... here's another shot with a slightly less zoomed-in perspective of how the engine bay looks from another car.

As soon as I get a chance and our schedules line up, I'll try to get my friend's V6 Caprice up on my lift and take some pics underneath. You made me more curious now to see that fail for myself. Hopefully GM made this loom easy to unplug or reroute to perform the oil change.

Seven quarts for the V6? GM must be inventing a new standard because the V8 takes around that much as well (actually about 1 quart more).

No more buying a single 5-quart jug from Advance as an "oil-change special", expecting it to be enough. I made this mistake when I did my first oil change on the PPV. I was used to every other SBC engine since the beginning of time taking 5 quarts. I should have looked at the manual first. LOL.

No need to put it on the lift, just pop the hood and you can see it. Standing in front look on the right side (driver's) of the motor. There is a silver cap about the size of a soda can with a bolt on top, thats where the oil filter goes. You can just barely see it in the first photo posted, its just in front of the yellow dip stick handle.

Tell me about the oil too, the second photo posted shows someone wrote on the fuse box it takes 7 and a third qt's. My V8 Ford only takes 5! I remember my first oil change the mechanic wasn't sure how much to pout in so he started with 4 qt, didn't even register on the dip stick, so we had to look it up. Crazy.

And.... just to keep the thread going here's two shots of the 2014 Caprice PPV with the 3.6 motor. Note the differences from the earlier posted pics of the 2011/12/13 cars.

All I can see is a slight change in the MC reservoir shape, minor difference in the (red) positive battery post plastic housing, and the lack of a PS fluid reservoir, since the 2014 car has electric PS. Clearly, the earlier model has also been upfitted, with many wires running to & fro, many exposed--not a very good install, IMO.

The older pix, more close-up, cut out some details that can't be compared to the 2014.

I hate to be "that guy" but, I can't believe how unattractive that V6 is compared to the V8. That intake manifold is hideous, shame they couldn't give it a cover. The 6L has a small cover on the intake doesn't it? I also wonder what difference there is between this engine and the Camaro's version that gives the Camaro 323hp compared to the Caprice's 300hp.

I now own a 2014 V6 Camaro, long story, but it does run very well. It takes 6 quarts, and I took the engine cover off. Talk about weird, the oil filter. It's actually a very high tech engine. I wouldn't mind having a dual overhead cam L77!

My coworker just got a new V6 camaro and he loves that thing . Says the V6 feels like a V8 , says the hp for the price is what sold him on getting it .
