Solo axle-back

Post by bkwagonss »

I contacted the Solo Performance guys by email the other day.
I'm interested in an axle-back exhaust.
They sell the kits for the G8 (like many places do) but not for our car.
Solo's axle-back looks like a trumphet.
Basically it's a straight pipe out to some nice tips.
But these have an extra pipe coming off of it used for tuning the sound.
I guess it kinda work like the extra chambers on our intakes.
They say it takes the drone out of the cabin.
Anyway, they wrote me back and said they are willing to work with me.
They want me to call them and work out the details.
I asked if they could either modify the length before the tips or if they could sell me the exhaust with 6" or so extra pipe and I could cut to length and clamp on the tips.
They also have many tip styles.
Does anyone know the exact difference between the G8 & Caprice?
It would be nice to just tell them I need it to be exactly 4" longer so they could do that and weld the tips on for me.

I'll measure again tonight, but I think it is a 5 1/2" difference...

I have a set of stock G8 axle-backs in my garage...

Or, if you are not wanting the noise factor, you can order Caprice-V takeoff dual tip mufflers from JHP, and have them on it five minutes. They weren't overly expensive either.

So this also implies that if we straight-pipe the axle-back, it may drone. Because I was considering that and just reusing the tips I have.

When we did the SLP setup, my shop made a appx. 4.5 inch pipe extension between the muffler and the tip that allowed the installer to slip one pipe over the other, then when it was fitted to exactly the correct spot it was tacked and then dropped and welded. Had to make sure to get the fitment correct before locking everything down.

The performance, hence, loud, systems will drone, and sound like poopy, if you don't disable DOD, AFM. I like the OEM sound of stock system, with the dual tip OEM muffler. Of course, I don't need loud, I have ten pounds on demand, for 600. I crack myself up!

I'll second the AFM drone issue as I have it somewhat with my SLP's. Going from 8 cylinders to 4 cylinders drops the noise exactly one octave down. It's not bad at all in 8 cyl mode, but 4 cyl you definitely know it's there. So you have sound like hmmmmmmHMMMMMMMMMhmmmmmmmHMMMMMMMMMM all the time when it's flip-flopping from 8 to 4 cylinders and back to 8.

So yeah, if you have the chance disable the AFM feature in programming, then go into your motor and replace the AFM lifters. You will thank yourself over and over and over again down the road!

Well after reading this, I'll stay with the stock exhaust (no wonder it has so many resonators), and I'm happy to get better MPG on the highway with AFM enabled than just about any other large family sedan. I'll take my chances with the lifters. If they fail later, THEN I'll replace them.
