Roto Fab CAI to Hood gap

Post by Pursuit »

Just installed the Roto Fab CAI last Friday afternoon. Realized that there was a gap between the top of the CAI and the bottom of my hood. As a side note, not faulting Roto Fab in any way, what-so-ever. Great product with great instructions!
I was on my way to the track and wanted to make sure that I was getting cooler air. I quickly fabricated an aluminum cover to seal the air box. But I was curious how far from the hood the foam rubber seal was from the bottom of the hood.
Here are the pictures showing the compressed Play Dough cylinders. The red Play Dough is along the longest line of the triangle stamped in the bracing under the hood. The little red dots are just to locate the 1/4" holes in the stamping of the bracing. Might use them later

And the rest of the pics. Might use the "red dot" locations to help attach the aluminum cover to the underside of the hood along with a couple of other mounting points. Saturday morning I drove the car for 20 minutes and used an IR Thermometer to measure the Roto Fab CAI at different points. The car sat for 5 minutes before I could measure. Outside temp was 72 degrees. Air filter was 83 degrees. Air box temp measured from the engine compartment side 115 degrees. Inlet elbow attached to throttle body 128 degrees

Here is what I did to create a cover to eliminate the need for the hood to seal the Roto Fab CAI. The cover is a piece of laminated architectural aluminum. It has been shaped and bent to follow the original and modified shape of the CAI. The attachment points took a lot of trial and error. Getting the aluminum brackets fabricated to allow for an approximately a 1/4" compression all of the way around the CAI took a lot of patience.

Thanks! Spent a lot of time on this. Still tweaking the fitment. I have been slowly shaving some sections of the sides of the CAI to bring the new lid away from just two points where the hood does touch. Lining up the aluminum brackets (with the rubber well nuts inserted) and the two countersunk holes in the lid took A LOT of trial and error. I originally cut the lid 1/2" bigger than the CAI to allow for final fitment after I could align the two holes with the fabricated brackets.
I am concerned that there are a lot of variables that would be encountered during installations. I would have to identify some absolutes/benchmarks on the RotoFab CAI to measure from to locate the bracket spot above the filter.
I took a chance of possibly ruining my CAI and would hate to have someone else not have success installing this modification.

But, I will attempt to provide as much info as possible. I will try to come up with a repeatable process to minimize misalignment.
