Z28 Headers on a PPV

Post by Pursuit »

I acquired the Z28 Tri-Y headers almost a year ago for $300, shipping included. They did not come with the heat shields. I was finally able to compare them to our cast manifolds (PPV/SS/ZL1). I mocked them up using the SS/ZL1 catalytic head pipes.

We installed the headers onto the engine. We sectioned the head pipe flanges off of the piping for the cats. we bolted the flanges to the header and then removed approximately 1-1/2" from the "height" of the pipe, just above the O2 sensors.

I kept a look out on eBay for a set. Less than $300 shipped. Every once and awhile a set will pop up.

Did you have to buy the z28 heat shields also or they were transfered over? Seems very obvious from the one photo that the section of tubing that connects the front cats to the manifold is much smaller diameter than the other sections used between the cats and the final pipe. This whole operation makes me think the hot ticket will be a set of coated shorty headers and have that front pipe replaced with 2 1/2"

I also bought a set of 2017 LT4 headers and cats. The heat shields that came with them were an exact swap back to the Z28 headers. FYI they are very similar in design, but, the cylinder head exhaust flange is different due to the direct injection head design, and the collector is at different angle and uses four bolts for the cats. The LT4 header also has a 2" outlet...
Yes, the pipe leading into the catalytic converter is 2" and the outlet of the Z28 header is 2" also. Depending on the outlet diameter of a shorty header, increasing the pipe size could be beneficial. Anybody have a shorty header they could measure?

Maurice

Was this fit to the stock exhaust? I like the compact tri-y nature of the ls7/z28 manifolds. There's nothing on the aftermarket really like them, just shorties and longtubes.
