Spectre cold air intake 9017

Post by Nate68c10 »

First thing I've done to my 2014 Caprice is a Spectre 9017 Cai and I couldn't find any info on these so I thought I'd show pics of how it fits. Overall it fits pretty good I will be adding some metal to the bottom of the air box heat shield to seal it off better and I'm going to add some half inch foam to the hood to try and seal it better from the top because it's not a perfect seal on the top. Other than that its a great unit for the price and sounds pretty cool compared to stock.

Toss a gopro camera or something similar in the engine compartment and close the hood. It will give you a pretty good idea of where you need to improve the seal. Moving it up a little bit might be all that you need to do, which is the case with the RotoFab. Where does it pull air from? Most of the "cold air" intakes pull the air directly from the hot engine compartment, which is not cold air at all. Even while driving, the IATs are higher than they should be with those. Your best bet is to add a 6" flexible hose, hollow out the faux drivers side vent under the headlight, and connect the two. Suddenly, you'll have a ram air type of setup and your IATs will be no more than about 5 degrees above ambient.

Is the bottom of the box sealed? I ask, because the factory air filter box actually has a duct on the bottom that ducts air from ahead of the radiator support, which should be cooler than engine compartment air. That was one of the reasons I just replaced the tubing and helmholtz resonator with a straight curved pipe and K&N drop-in. The cold air was already there. ;)
