converter issue

Post by officermiller »

Hey guys finally got my transmission out to get it swapped out. Found my issue. Snapped the snout off the converter. Previous owner had it do the same thing with the first trans he put in the car. I'm figuring it is a spacing issue and that the converter needs to be shimmed to sit all the way in the trans. Here is a couple pics of the carnage.

There were pics of a converter, with a broken snout. Trust me, I slept in a Holiday Inn Express!

 Wow. Never seen one that bad. Usually, they shear the input shaft on the transmission.

Many aftermarket converters require a LS*-specific converter pilot bushing:

http://www.jegs.com/p/JEGS-Performance- ... 9/10002/-1

That's usually for transmission swaps, I'd expect a converter for a modern LS*/OEM trans combination would have the proper snout diameter and length, but you never know. Make sure yours has one, if needed.

Also, Hughes recommends an air gap of 1//8"-3/16" between the converter and flex plate when the trans is bolted to the engine. If you have less than that, then the converter isn't fully-seated in the transmission. If there is more than that, they recommend stacking washers between the flex plate and converter to get the air gap to within specs. You may want to verify the air gap requirements with your converter manufacturer.

I plan on checking the clearance when I put it all back together. I just picked up a 13k mile g8 6l80 to use in the car instead of haven't the other rebuilt. Talked to fti and they said 260ish to have the converter rebuilt. So hoping with a fresh trans, and new converter that it will all work out you time. Just got to measure it and be sure.

Are you keeping the old unit or turning it in as a core? I may need to buy parts. I'll know tonight.

Unfortunately I had to turn it in as a core even the used parts place wanted it as a core.

Did you end up going with a direct swap replacement?

Having said that, I'm going to be pulling my 708 mile transmission with my locked up motor in a few weeks and will not need it as I'm pulling my V2's LSA with transmission to swap in.
