Yep,
I've read all of that. Put the fitting in the case. Just couldn't get the right angle to get the dip stick tube into the case seal. Next trick will be to loosen the passenger side motor mount and rock the engine up. Next week I will try again.

No, nothing yet. My work situation has changed so that I can't take the risk of not having the car ready to roll out the garage on Monday morning. I was thinking about trying the dipstick next time I'm under the car (changing oil or installing the exhaust), but since it seems that everything I do on this car takes 2X-4X longer than everyone else says it took, I'm hesitant to start too many projects on the car at once.

Wow 4 hours later i finally got this puppy in.... WHat a PIA with the wiring harness in the way etc. I ended up needing to remove the #8 plug wire as well as dropping the trans cross member bolts and center brace so the trans would hang down and inch or so. Then i used a piece of 2x4 wood to shove the trans over towards the driver's side and it finally was possible to force the tube into the case...
