3.27 differential

Post by amx1pxp »

Was wondering if anyone can tell me if I need to get my differential out of an SS Camaro in order for it to have limited slip. Will a late model V6 car have limited slip? How can I determine whether or not a unit has limited slip before I buy? Is it the absence or presence of the "Y" after LSD on the data plate?

Thanks much,
Paul

This is covered in several other posts, but here's the short version:

There are 2 primary options for 3.27/LSD diff & housing.

1. Chevy SS sedan or G8 GXP with A6 trans - same diff housing & limited slip as PPV - 210mm (8.3") ring gear

2. Gen 5 Camaro SS (V8) with A6 trans - limited slip is standard - 218mm (8.6") ring gear

There may be other Camaro options, but if it's not a V8, most of the rear axles are a smaller 195mm? (7.625") ring gear design - NOT a viable option. If you are able to find a V6 Camaro rear end, do NOT assume it's an 8.6 unit, even if it is the right ratio & limited slip.

Holden-built cars used the 8.3 diff/housing, made by ZF

Gen5 Camaro used the 8.6 diff/housing with V8, made by AAM (US)

6cyl manual trans Camaro also had 218mm 3.27 LSD. The auto 6cyl got the 195mm. Two labels on them will show ratio, size and type

I used a 3.27 out of a manual v6 for my g8 seems to be the same diff as the ss was cheaper and easier option for me finding the man v6 diff vs the ss. Saved a couple hundred bucks going this way interestingly enough.

I think the issue is finding the V6 MT diff, as it was not nearly as common as SS AT, and its not clear if all V6 MT were limited slip.

The sticker on a limited slip diff will say "LSD" on it. When in doubt, look at the sticker.

So I found a differential at a junkyard for $500. Guy claims it's out of an SS sedan. Has a sticker with a barcode on it showing part # 92283118, which shows in GM Parts Direct website as a correct part number for a 2015 SS with auto trans., 3.27 ratio. The GM website makes no mention of whether or not it has limited slip and the unit I'm considering does not have "LSD" marked anywhere on it. Should I pull the trigger on this one? I thought all the units with limited slip were marked "LSD".

Mine was out of an MT V6 Camaro. Look for these identifiers. GW6 and G80 RPO codes.

AXLE,REAR,3.27 RATIO 3.27R(GW6)

AXLE,REAR,POSITRACTION,LIMITED SLIP POSITRACTION L/SLIP R/AXL(G80)

PN # 22928326

That's exactly what I installed off a MT V6 Camaro I found on ebay. I think I paid like 400 for it shipped.

I got mine from Bill Smith Auto parts on ebay, he was extremely helpful and made sure I got the right axle. Would recommend.

That part number seems like it would work in theory however.
