Tap shift idea

Post by dr1rrrr »

So I like many others want to add some form of manual shifting to my Caprice. I've been looking at the tap shift boxes available and had an idea. I'm not totally familiar with how the stock shifter on a Caprice works but I assume that each position of the shifter sends a signal voltage to the bcm telling it what position the shifter is in. If this is the case why couldn't repin the shifter so that when you are in L that puts you into tap shift mode (like the switch on the tap shift boxes) then use paddle shifters to actually shift up and down. I'm assuming there is some major issue with doing this or it would have already been done but I figured someone on this forum would know the answer.

He added a separate box with two switches. One switch will put it into 'manuall' mode, and the other switch will upshift and downshift.
