Weird suspension sounds.

Post by stephenhunt »

So I've checked my hub, heat shield, and for any loose parts but haven't found anything. I'm hearing what sounds like marbles tumbling in a metal drum whenever I get over 15 mph. This is occurring in the left front wheel area. Anyone have something similar happen?

It's been doing it for a while. At least 3000 miles now.

Any chance there's something in your tire? Like, rolling around inside the tire?

No, I don't think that's the case because I jacked up the car and spun the wheel. I didn't hear anything when I did that. Also it never really makes noise until around 15mph +

Check all four corners, including the axles. Sounds like that can telegraph. I had a rattle on our 96 SS that sounded like the passenger side seat belt hitting something, or some loose part in the passenger front door. Turns out I had a couple tools laying together in the trunk that were rattling, telegraphing the noise to the front of the car (I'm guessing the sound was bouncing off the dash or windshield). About drove me nuts, as it would come and go. Tools are now wrapped, and no more noises.

Also check the upper front strut mounts. They're prone to failure, leaving an opportunity for metal strut bits to make contact with metal body bits, which could allow normal road noise to transfer from the strut to the body.

Negative. The center cap is on good. I found a cracked lug nut, but I don't think that would cause the noise

My vote goes to the upper strut mounts also. If its well worn it would transfer vibration (contact) between strut and tower. Also just for peace of mind, check the driveshaft couplers for excessive wear.

I know I am resurrecting an old thread, but was wondering if the reason for the noise was found?

I have the same strange noise in the front left of my 2013 and only hear it when the driver's side window is open. My car just turned over 8900 miles so I don't think anything is worn yet.

Thanks
Jeff
