5th gen ZL1 wheels

Post by hdcjmartin »

Wanting some opinions on these wheels, I've only seen ONE other caprice with this style of wheel. They're pretty much the same specs as the traditional 5 spoke Camaro SS wheel that you see on everyones car so I figured they would probably fit. I'm gonna do 9.5" in the rear and 8.5" in the front.

regular Camaro 20's (5th gen) are 8"/+35 front & 9"/+40 rear. The 9" rear is already an interference problem, so 9.5" will be as well--rear fender-roll time.

Not faulting this, but I just don't get the staggered deal--running the 8.5's on all 4 corners, in this case, would clear the rear body openings (assuming appropriate tire sizing).

I'm the odd-man-out on this, I'm sure....

So 8.5” would clear on all four corners with no problems? Could I fit a 275/30/20 on the rear?

I do understand the desire to put as much rubber on the ground as possible, whether it's "needed" or not--visuals matter in many cases.

275/30-20 shows an acceptable bead width range of 9" to 10", so squeezing that size onto an 8.5" wheel is not within manufacturer recommendations....not saying it can't be done, however, the lower in tire profile you go (the aspect ratio in this case being 30), the more critical the wheel bead width becomes.

Mounting on too-narrow or too wide wheel puts extreme stress on the sidewall--though it may only be 1/2" too narrow, in this case--so it's important to be cautious. Longevity, handling, and warranty can all be impacted by incorrect mounting.

You can compare tire brands to see that there is some variance, but not much. Tire Rack provides fairly complete data for most of what they sell, to give you some idea of what will or won't work, from the perspective of the manufacturers.

What about these? Large selection of sizes, widths, and offsets.

The offsets just do not make for good fitment to sedan version of the Zeta platform. As already noted, the Camaro 9" wheel is a problem even with +40mm and correct tire size. By comparison, the SS sedan rear 9" wheel is +57mm with a 275 tire, so it does clear--both fender and brakes.

I see nothing on the list of M228 wheels that won't require a body massage.

Here's something I just sent to an SS owner asking about 20" wheel options, with no plans to lower the car and wishing to avoid rolling any wheel openings:

Here's another few wheels to look at, if you're open to another option:

For the first 3 wheels, I would recommend the +45mm offset option--a 9" wheel with +40mm offset will be VERY close to fender contact, depending on what tire size you use on the rear.

9" black

9" black chrome

9" black milled

9.5" black milled
http://www.elementwheels.com/proddetail ... 95aff06blk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The last pair, 9" & 9.5", could be a staggered set--tire sizing would be 255/35 front & 275/30 rear. Offsets to use would be +45mm front and +50mm rear. They are gloss black "milled", whatever that means. The wheels in these offsets are listed as "universal", meaning they would be machined to order for the wheel stud pattern. The +50 offset at the rear would be needed to avoid rolling fenders.

You would need to get them to agree to a "split" set, as their pricing is for 4-wheel sets. There is no staggered set in these sizes on the Element website, so you would need to talk to them. I know nothing about wheel weights, but the Flow-Formed construction does reduce weight over regular cast wheels.
