I had to help my insurer to underwrite the car. At first they said that the VIN wasn't recognized. We gave them a G8 VIN for comparison. We submitted the Caprice VIN, provided an MSRP and then let the actuaries' do their thing. Didn't take long, maybe 24 hours.

How do they handle used fire trucks, rescue squads, other government vehicles?

I'll keep this in mind during my quest. Comparing it to a G8 is a good idea and it was available in Canada.

Good news! The comparison to the G8 worked so it will be insured starting tomorrow! :D Thanks for that tip @pursuit.

It's not with my current insurer but that's fine because I think they are hosing me. I'll be paying half on the '11 PPV than what I'm paying on the '07 TrailBlazer with 4.2L I6 :x I may move all my vehicles to them.

Anyway, at least that's done. Just the issue with the pre-tensioner and the safety now.

A bit of an update.

So I bring the Caprice to the local dealer for the 3 recalls (shifter, keys and seat belt tensioner). When he asked what kind of car, I told him "2011 Caprice". He just went "a what?". Gave him the registration and he saw what it was. Anyway, would take a week for the parts to come from the US (of course). He calls me Tuesday so I book an appointment for Thurs.

Wednesday, get a second temporary permit for the car. Thursday, drop it off and go for breakfast with a friend. Later in the afternoon, the service rep calls. Says the belt tensioners he got were the wrong ones. He explained that my car was built in June 2011 so it has some parts for a 2012. The tensioners had a different connector. It will take another week for the parts to come in from the US. F@ck! Problem is that this was my second temporary permit on this car and I can't get anymore for a year and it would probably expire by the time the parts come in. Friend gave me the idea to just leave it at the dealer until next week when the parts come in and get them to do the safety. They charge $30 more than my usual place for safeties but I don't have much choice.

One good thing, when they took the seats out to replace the tensioners, the passenger side wire was broken, hence the ABS code. Said they'll fix it gratis (Yeah!).

Friday, rep calls me again. They were going through the safety and it failed for the rear doors for not opening from inside (police option). Said they'll take the panels off and check for linkages. Called back later and was able to reconnect the linkages that were there (whew!), same as the info I found here. Probably will get charged for the labour.

The adventure continues...

I couldn't even use the SS comparison because we don't these here neither. At a local cruise night, I got a lot of interest. Everybody would go to the back to look at the name badge.

I got some info that the other three might have been completely thrashed so I may have the only Caprice PPV in the whole country
