Definitely will be a cool build to follow. I hope you start a build thread and keep us updated for the plans on the LS3. Good luck!

You mentioned a fist sized hole in the block. What I think I saw in the pictures was a hole in the cylinder wall. If it's just the cylinder wall, that's actually not a big deal. A drop in cylinder sleeve is about 60 bucks plus installation. Any machine shop can do it but of course they'll want to clean the block and try to talk you into cleaning up the bores, etc. (read more costs)

Your block may have value after all...?

Heh, yeah, as others said, the seller failed to tell you about the half-mile, or so the engine was going 'taka-taka-taka-taka-clunk' before it would not start. :x

Many decades ago, I bought a 1971 Trans Am that came to me literally in boxes. One piston had both skirts broken off, and a hole in the culinder wall. Even then, a new sleeve was ~$60, but I went with that, and saved the original 455HO block for that car. We had zero problems with the engine after the rebuild. It was quite a wild car, even with a mild hydraulic cam, ported heads and headers (11.50 @111 in the 1/4 with a 3.08 rear gear). I built the car, my Dad painted the subframe assembly in gloss black Imron.

Sleeves are a great way to save the engine. Otherwise, I'd go with a 6.2, or LSX, just for fun. If the rest of the car is decent, and you have the space, it would be a great project.

That is a good idea. Its quite a bit worse than the picture makes it look though. I think the crank journal may have damage also. I'm not sure if it could be sleeved, but my logic is if I am going to the trouble to pull the engine and rebuild the rotating assembly, I might as well spend a little extra and do it as best as possible. So....

We've decided to keep the car and rebuild it. I'm having AMS Racing build me a LS3 short block, 416 stroker with -25cc pistons for the right compression for pump gas and to clear the valves with my very aggressive cam. It had just a few thousands clearance with the oem flat tops. My son and I will do the top end and the engine swap. Hoping for 600 at the crank after its all done. Should be quite a fun project for my son and I.

I'll start a build thread as soon as there are some pics to share. Thanks for all the advice.

I'm very anxious to watch your build. Keep us current. A machine shop can tell you if your old block is "recoverable". Be suspicious if they tell you they'll dispose of it for you :). Walk into the transaction with the assumption that it can be recovered. You can get decent cash for it with a minimal investment if it needs (only) to be sleeved. If there are no structural problems and oil/water system is tight.. you might be able to pay for some of your "stroke" parts.
The parts to stroke a 6.0 or 6.2 (crank, pistons, rods) are in the neighborhood of 1500 bucks.

10.5 or higher compression , 11 or higher if you have ethanol local , since our car are flexfuel vehicles

Thanks! I had them switch to the -4 Mahle pistons. I calculate 11.5 now

If that's the block you are getting, it looks like it has the DOD ports on it, too. Are you keeping DOD, or will those be plugged?

My original motor was already DOD-deleted, so I’ll be moving all those parts over.

What about from here? It is out of my price range, but they appear to be worth it.
