Headliner and trim blackout project underway

Post by paul54 »

I am redoing the headliner to black, and painting all the grey trim black, using the SEM products. Progress to date:
- removed trim and headliner from car
- peeled off old headliner fabric and foam
- cleaned, prepped and painted the non-ABS trim Landau Black.
- Ran out of paint, so will paint the ABS pieces next (it is a different procedure anyway)
- I have the new headliner, just waiting for the adhesive to arrive.
- Ordered a few pieces of sound deadener to put in the roof. I am not going crazy with it, like one of the guys on here did. Just going to hit all the open spots on the roof.
- Getting the headliner out of the car is a b*tch!! There is no easy way. I think I am going to remove the seat before it goes back in.

Excellent. Will look nice. Which adhesive are you using 3M 80?

I am using this 3M: 3M 38808 Headliner and Fabric Adhesive.

this seemed to consistently be the best reviewed aerosol. Fingers crossed.

Well, I am not going to attempt a second career at a trim shop. Headliner is glued down. Same stuff I posted on the FB group:
- Use three people. Two to hold the material off the board, one to smooth down.
- Get many razor blades for the trimming. They dull after about 2 feet. Something about the glue must dull them instantly.
- Take your time. The sections in the back, where the missing grab handles go, is a bitch.
- 2 full cans of large 3M

In fact the entire thing is a bitch. I have a couple of mistakes, but I think when its in the car, normal people won't notice.

Sorry the photos are sideways.

Careful with that $1000 headliner.

Personally I like the lighter colored headliners. But looks like you are doing a nice job. I’m interested to see it when it’s done. You doing a black overhead console as well? They are factory in some VE cars in oz. can find them online occasionally.

nice job !!

the lack of black upper half is the biggest thing i hate about my ppv and SS , while i love the 2 tone interior of my 06 gto , i really miss the black upper half my G8GT had

GM's reasoning for the lighter upper was said it makes the car feel bigger inside , i think their research group was on some bad drugs when they came up with that !!!

I happen to agree - and it didn't take any research to come up with my view on this.

Do you have a reference on the GM statement(s) about this?

was from when i was in GM tech classes , talking to one of the teachers

i do remember there being a 2nd reason , which sounds more plausible , and it was to save money as well , saving the interior parts costs using a neutral color to go with the dark or tan lower half

though while talking to him , he seamed like a straight shooter , and it did make sense to me at the time , and he understood and said he has heard from others that felt the same way i did , that all one color looked better , and if they wanted a 2 tone interior it needed to be done differently
