Rear window tint bubbled up fast, so removed it.

Post by K9Vic »

My car had limo tint on the rear window from when it was in use by a local Constable. I never used the defrost and I hear it can heat the tint and cause it to shrink and/or bubble. It is a 2011, but was first titled new in January 2013 and I bought it used in October 2013. The tint on the side windows is fine so far.

Anyone have issues with their Holden cars, Caprice or G8 over the years?

Going to get it replaced when I have some extra cash.

I bet the constable was a smoker. The only tint I've had to bubble was where someone smoked in the car. Strip it, clean it well, and get re-applied.

Smoking in vehicle against policy in almost all departments here in Texas and no smoking was ever done in this car. No smell of smoke and no signs of it anywhere. Car only had 16k miles on it when I bought it and was a one driver unit. I just had a tint guy tell me it was due to cheap tint and the how hot it can get here in Texas.

That is just a bad tint install. They didn't prep the back window very well. That is the toughest window to clean properly. just an uncomfortable position to spend the time needed to do the job right. All of the separation started at the defrost lines, not from heat but from impurities. The tint over the defrost line itself hasn't separated. And look at how bad the adhesion is over the third brake light. They probably didn't remove it to even clean. My window tinter cut the tint around the third brake light.

If it was the cheap tint, the others would have done the same. I agree with a bad install. It is a pain to do a big rear window correctly, and when you add in the rear defrost it becomes that much more difficult.

You are lucky to still have a working defrost. Many years ago, I had a B-Body that must have had really good tint on it at one time, and when I bought it from a dealer, they had to remove it (state law). Upon removal, it must have destroyed all of the defroster circuits and the dealer didn't disclose this little detail. I didn't notice until after the sale. Close inspection showed every line pulled off in spots. Dealer wouldn't replace the glass. Last time I ever stepped foot in that dealership... And last time I ever wanted window tint near any of my cars.

You just have to pay attention to who does the job. We have/had a very good tint installer down in this part of Texas. They were one of the few installers who could/would do a 94-96 B-body rear window in one piece. I still have the windows in our 95 DGGM tinted by these guys, and it looks great. It wasn't the cheapest install in town, but they used good film, and did great work.

I need to see if they're still in business, as I'd like to get the windows in our '12 Caprice done.
