Dash Cam
Dash Cam
I had my eye on a specific model on ebay for a couple months and when I went into China a few weeks away I sought one out and found it. I like it because its up and out of the way. No one notices it until I point it out. Problems I'm having are the power sources. I ran the wiring down the passenger side a-pillar because the small fuse box in the driver's kick panel didn't seem to have everything i needed.
I plugged the RCA connector in the DVD connection from my video cable. I'd prefer it to display on the "front" camera but I haven't figured that out yet. The ground was easy with plenty of points behind the glove box to connect to. I got the Run/start voltage from the PPV wiring so that's not and issue. My original thought on the constant +12 (batt) power was to splice into one of the orange stereo wires but then I saw the glove box light power connector and thought it should work. It doesn't appear too. I'm willing to bet that the BCM sees the draw on the light and shuts it off after some time just like it does other lighting. So I need to go back in and find another source. Back to the original plan of the stereo power wire or does anyone have another option?

Re: Dash Cam
You got that huge 10 guage battery wire thats part of the police package in the kick panel are you could tap into. Kinda overkill for a dash cam but it is an easy grab. May even want to add a fuse block there to fuse the camera wire with something like a 3 amp fuse because if you counted on the 50 amp fuse in the trunk that camera would be ash by the time that blew.
Another option is converting the RAP relay into full time battery power and taping into the 12 volt accessory socket wire.
How to here: Convert accessory outlets to always on.

Re: Dash Cam
I thought about tapping into the big wire, but I didn't see any voltage there when I put a meter on it. Since I wasn't too keen on the idea I didn't pursue it. I like the idea about getting the accessory power but I'd only want one of them to be on all the time. I guess I 'll follow the thread...smwalker wrote:You got that huge 10 guage battery wire thats part of the police package in the kick panel are you could tap into. Re: Dash Cam
Honestly, I forgot. i think there was a smaller wire with constant +12 going to an unused connector in that bundle.FzCobra wrote:So what did you end up using for the 12v constant?

Re: Dash Cam
Thanks, I didn't know if had a specific brand you used that was a caprice specific camera type thing. Looks like a good fit.

Re: Dash Cam
It kinda wedges into place with how tight it fits around the mirror base. I never bothered using the double-sided tape that's meant to stick it to the windshield; it just stays there.No Moa wrote:Thanks, I didn't know if had a specific brand you used that was a caprice specific camera type thing. I thought you might want an example of what it looks like so I popped the card out and spliced together a video. I replaced the audio with some stock youtube music, but I will note that with mine the shielding isn't very good. I get a buzzing in the audio whenever I drive near high-voltage wires. The video is here: https://youtu.be/FXTzyLN6J-s" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
