Reverse Camera Install/Plate light Access

Post by 91C02920 »

I installed my reverse camera yesterday on my '11 and it was pretty easy.
I use a plate frame mounted camera.
Drilled the hole through the bumper cover near the top of the plate. Actually on my car, there were two other holes drilled to mount the plate, so I opened the original hole just enough to take the camera wire. The original hole I used seem to be a bit narrower than the plate holes here. Probably was a plate mount that originally went to them that I don't have, oh well.

Point is, drill at the top of the plate and you will clear the bumper.

After that, in the drivers fender well, there is a grommet the plate lights pass through.
That was where I fed the wire into the car. I made a little slit and pushed it through.
The grommet comes out easy so I did it in the fender well. If it was warmer, there is a bunch of tape on the grommet, I may have been able to untape it, feed it in and tape it up again, but it was cold and the tape was hard.

It was really easy that way. No need to take the bumper off like I've seen suggested in some threads. I could get to everything reaching in under the car.

Grabbed power and ground from the reverse lights. Light Green is the +, black is the -. In the harness going into the taillight.

I ran the wire down the drivers side and across the dash to the radio. Broke the drivers door jam trim piece, the rear clip held tight and the plastic decided to give way being cold and all, not too bad, just a hole around the clip. :(

Yes, if you get it reprogrammed, and get video inputs to the connector on it.

Easiest path to getting the radio unlocked is to send it to Chris White, he can reprogram it and config it for reverse camera, rear seat entertainment (rse), and bluetooth, and remove the driver lockouts for phone dialing and rse display.

You can try and get a dealer to do it, but they generally will not have a clue about it, and if they do end up enabling them, it still won't remove the driver lockouts (they keep you from dialing a call and from viewing the rse on the stereo while moving, doesn't really affect the rear view camera).
I've brought them the instructions ( http://newcaprice.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=1089" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) and they still didn't have a clue. 2 different dealers actually. Wouldn't even try it. If you do try to go to a dealer, make your own usb cable in advance, they won't have the cable.

3rd option would be to get a clone MDI and try it yourself. It is pretty straight forward to reprogram and enable reverse camera and rse, but that doesn't remove the driver lockouts either. Bit of a learning curve there to remove those.

Getting the video into the radio once unlocked is another story.

You can try and buy a cable that plugs into the 20 pin socket on the side of the radio for that with the video in for the Reverse Camera and RSE for $100 if you find it on ebay.

I chose to have someone solder a conncector to pins on the board like in this thread: http://newcaprice.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=1250" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Cliffs: Yes, send radio to Chris White, pay $100 for connector if you find it, and you are good.

Lol, throw that all out the window if you have a 2014 like I see in your sig.

This applies to '11-13 with the old IQ units.

Chris White can probably still help you with a '14 and up models though.
I haven't researched those yet as I have an '11.

The 2014 radios, to activate the rear camera should be just a recode or just a simple turn on with the dealer tool. The issue is, finding someone in the dealer willing to help you out without charging an arm and a leg to do it.

Well that one I can help you with Dealers don't have ability to do squat on a 14, silverbox calibrations are locked at shipment. Even if they did try to finagle it the unique build of a PPV would not only result in multiple settings being messed up but it being bricked from future software updates.

That said we can indeed build a custom cal to turn on the camera (and guidelines). We can also remove the motion locks as well while we are in there ;) We could also do the holden startup etc.. We can also build a custom calibration for a nav silverbox to replace the standard unit for a really nice upgrade!

Chris,
This is Victor H. You programmed my Chevy SS IPC for my PPV a few months ago. It's been working great.

I'm almost ready to send you my 2014 PPV silver box. I have a couple of questions based on your response:

1) What is a "nav silver box"? Is this a silver box from a car that had Nav like the Chevy SS?
2) What are the advantages of giving you a "Nav Silverbox" versus the stock PPV unit?

Thanks Chris!

I too am interested in this Chris. Have you enabled rear vision cameras on 2014 Caprices before? Can I get more information such as price and what else you recommend can be done? Do you prefer PM, phone call, email or other for communication? Thanks.
