FYI anyone ordering keys, they are back ordered. been waiting a month so far. I only have one key. My dealer friend said he is surprised. COuld it be because of the recall?

Probably not the recall. The key recall doesn't affect the 2014 newer cars as they have different keys. Of course the dealer could be making excuses and blaming it on the Australian roots of the car. I have found this to be a recurring theme at various businesses. "Yeah, that car is made in Australia, its takes a special oil filter" Yeah, whatever.

The key fob is common to the Camaro and multiple other GM cars so its not unique. There is another post on here somewhere that deals with it but if you want keys and don't need the actual fob, you can ask for a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado key blank at the parts department and have them laser cut it to your Caprice
s VIN. The Silverado has a separate key and fob like in the 90s and the key has the transponder and will program successfully to your caprice to start the car. See the owners manual for programming instructions.

I can post a pic of the key if you are curious. I had these made for every Caprice (2014 and up) in our fleet because they are smaller and easier to carry around when you need to leave the car locked and the engine running. I also made a few for my own car for trips to the lake and what not so I can get the key wet and not worry about the fob.

I forgot to mention this will only work if the dealership you visit actually has the machine that laser cuts keys by VIN rather than the old machines that duplicate and existing key.

I understood that all keys got cut in a central location and sent to GM dealerships. Why they need the VIN before the order arrives so it can be cut to the original specs. They would not require every dealership to buy a pricey machine much less train the monkeys working in the parts departments how to do it accurately.

I think you are correct, partially. It is an expensive machine but some dealerships have them but I bet not most of them. If they don't have one, they got to have them cut by GM.

When I first tried this experiment in 2014 it was to find a slim key Officers can use to get back into a locked running car that was easier to carry on a belt than a flip out fob which is partially useless since the fobs don't work when another key is in the ignition switch. Back then, we did not know if it was going to work but we tried it anyway. I chose the 2014 Silverado key blank because it was the first GM laser cut style key I had seen that was a stand alone key no fob or buttons on it at all.

The dealership already tried having GM cut one but GM showed no key alternative available other than the factory flip out style fob and were not flexible enough to cut a Silverado style key using a Caprice VIN. They then called a major dealership in San Antonio (Gunn Chevrolet) who had the machine to do this. Gunn took down the VIN, cut a key and mailed it to my local dealership. I received it a few days later and it unlocked the door. Obviously it would not start the car because it was not programmed. I did the easy programming real quick and it started the car. I had more keys cut for the rest of the 2014 Caprices we got that year at a cost of about 96 dollars which included Gunn's mark up and shipping charges.

In 2015 my local dealership, which is a very well performing dealership, acquired their own laser cutting key machine. Since then I have had over 30 Silverado key blanks cut to fit 2014 2015 and 2016 Caprices. They are all still working perfectly. Everytime, I just walk in, tell the parts guy what I need, show proof of registration which also gives him the VIN. He cuts the keys right there at the counter (the machine is very quiet compared to the old kind) and gives them back to me. Now that they have a machine at this dealership, it costs us about 37 dollars a key.

I just had another one of these keys cut the other day for my own car. Here is pic to refer to on what they look like and what the part number is for the Silverado key blank. Just have to call your dealership to find out if they have the equipment. If they don't and they have a cool parts or service guy/gal they may know a dealership in the region that does have one. For Texas people, I know for a fact Gunn Chevrolet and Chuck Nash Chevrolet can cut these keys and they have blanks in stock. In fact, they were even able to cut me a key for an old 1993 Caprice 9C1 that is still in our fleet and the keys were lost just, by the VIN only.

Makes me kinda glad I never acted on my interest in working as parts "monkey" for a Chevy dealer....!

That's assuming the lock cylinder is original--lucky this time!

The guy at the dealership is a good friend. He bought my 95 impala ss, drove it for several years, got tboned, had it fixed, then a year later, stopped for a officer crossing a crosswalk and got rearended. So I bought the car back for parts. To bad nice car. He does not have a key machine. He was ordering me fob/key from GM.

I bought 4 key fobs on ebay for the 2014 caprice. So now I will take this info see if I can find a dealer to cut me a Silverado blank.
