2012 Caprice Project Fast daily driver sleeper

Post by jeaton48 »

I posted in the new user forum that I had bought a year ago and was in the middle of an engine rebuild and upgrade. I finally finished it this last Thursday and got it back on the road for the 1st time. Boy has it come alive! It has been bored .020 over, new flat top pistions and rings, new bearings, new melling high flow oil pump, heads surfaced and new valve seals, Brian Tooley Racing LS3 stage 1 camshaft, morel lifters, DOD delete kit from Texas Speed, CHE bronze rocker trunion upgrade, and Brian Tooley racing Chromoly pushrods.
While the engine was getting upgraded, I decided to upgrade the restrictive exhaust system. I got JBA Chevy SS long tube headers, Magna Flow high flow 3in round cats, and I took from Pursuits idea on this forum to modify a Camaro ZL1 Bi-modal exhaust. I found a take off ZL1 cat back system on craigslist while working in Sacramento for $300 and brought it back with me to Washington. I bought some 2.5in straight pieces, the X pipe, and a couple 90degree mandrel bent pieces from Summit. Asside from diessecting and welding the tailpipes straight it wasn't too bad to modify. The senter section bolted right up to the stock mounts at the rear axle. I cut off the front mounts at the trans and welded it to the camaro pipes when it was mocked up. I installed a vacuum switch in the engine compartment and ran 1/4 brake line to the back and Teed at the rear axle to the mufflers for the cut out valves. I used the police looking switch box i had mounted in my console (hooked to the factory aux police wiring harness) to switch the valve (it is the switch labeled "pursuit").
I also added a Roto-Fab cold air intake that went in nicely with no mods. I might try to seal the top a little better, as when idling in traffic the IAT gets pretty warm.
I got a HP tuners suite and have been working with Chris Henry at C Henry motorsports for my tune. The car sounds and runs awesome! The BTR Stage 1 cam has just enough of a lope at idle to say Im not stock, but is still daily driveable. The exhaust sounds mean and burly too!
I teed into my oil pressure port and added an Autometer oil pressure guage to the dash, it runs at just below 50psi at idle and just above 50psi cruising.

Nice. You tuning with a wideband? On a dyno eventually? Can't wait to see some numbers.

I haven't completely decided yet, I did order a weld in o2 bung with plug so i can run that option. I have been eyeballing a wideband kit on summit too. I also am curious what my official power numbers are too, so once i recoup some finances i may look up dyno time. I'm definitely going to take it to the late night drags in a month or so to see what 1/4 mile numbers i get.

If your car is being remote tuned, you absolutely need a wideband. I have an AEM 30-0333 which is nice and simple to use/connect. It plugs into the OBDII port between the car and your HP Tuners cable. Give it keyed power, enable the channel in HP Tuners, and you are good to go.

Very cool mods. Let me know when you take it to PIR. I wanna be there to see that thing run!
