And for people interested in the "how-to" aspect of working with the Tech 2, I found a rather comprehensive forum over at Saab Central that gives a lot of good info. on the tool and its application. You know, I really am surprised that folks haven't really got into working with our cars & these tools as they are essential for a number of functions... and do open up what you can do with the car somewhat. The forum is somewhat centered around Saab but the use of the tool is pretty much the same on our side.

Linky here....

do some research and be careful when buying a tech 2. there are a lot of chinese models out there that have been know to be duds. Also the software on it will need to be current and it may or may not require a specific card for our cars.

You are correct. I did ask if the Tech 2 was a Chinese clone. Seller admitted it might be.

Take a look at this document:

Spotting a Tech2 Clone

And read the reviews on this one:

http://www.amazon.com/GM-Tech2-Scanner- ... +2+scanner" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

These help you spot counterfeit ones. Then ask the seller more specific questions. Buyer beware.

So suppose I find a real Tech 2 scan tool. I notice there are a million software versions. Can I update the software to use on newer cars? I assume that It would be downloaded but I don't see GM throwing out software updates for free.

If the seller is marketing the tool as genuine GM and it's really a clone, then in that case the auction would need to be pulled. I hate it when people pull stunts like that. The guy obviously has a digital camera, make him send you a pic of the Caprice in the pick list for the car make/model. If it's not in there then pull your bid or let someone else take it higher.... but I agree. Questioning the seller is key here as well as detailed pics of front & rear.

And yes, I also agree that clones are a very big problem. I almost bought a Tech 2 at the Dayton hamfest last year, That one was from a closed dealership in Ohio and I was 99% sure it was a legit tool. By the time I could get the guy back to his table the tool, with the CANdi, cables, instructions et al, had sold. The buyer tried it out on his GMC pickup and it worked fine. $400 cash. I was kicking myself for days after....

Funny you say that... I had an email discussion with a friend today who said this:

"I worry about all the counterfeit ones out there. I saw a clone at Dayton last year they were trying to sell as OEM."

LOL! He's the same friend who gave me the PDF file that I posted above. I bet he printed that and took it with him to Dayton. So.....you may have had more luck than you think.

i cant remember how theyre updated, it might be just the cards you install. also i they dont list the car models just vin numbers. And one last thing. a friend of mine knowingly purchased a Chinese copy off ebay and has had only a few problems with it, but is generally happy. i have also used it and not had any problems. but it can go either way. your best best is to either buy a real tech 2 or a snap on solus pro or ultra. i think the solus pros can be had for around 1000-1200 bucks.
