Installing factory rear vision camera on 2014

Post by 9C1fanatic »

I don't know if this has already been done but I have found nothing reading this forum over the years or searches on this particular topic.

Ever since GM announced the 2015 Caprice would have a rear vision camera I have wanted to get this done on my 2014 Caprice I bought brand new in 2015. I hoped it would be as easy as obtaining the factory camera, trunk trim and harness and plugging it in since many times a wiring harness on a vehicle is standard no matter what options are selected and since the Caprice has had a rear camera for many years in other markets, I had high hopes.

Over a year ago when I was building my 2015 Caprice patrol car, I had the trunk apart and the back seat out and realized the 2014 does not have the connector for the camera. I was discouraged and put this on the back burner for a while. After running across a recent similar thread on this forum I decided to attack this again.

I started with research in the factory shop manual for a 2015 Caprice. The camera has a 6 wire harness that goes to it.

Ignition power
Ground to camera
Ground from camera back to camera harness shielding (protects video quality)
12 v signal to turn on camera (comes from BCM I assume)
Video signal +
Video signal -

I then pulled the radio first from the 2015 patrol car, then my personal 2014 car to compare. Here is what I found.

The screen itself is not the radio. It seems to just be the screen and the redundant controls for the radio. They looked identical on both 2014 and 2015 cars.

I then pulled the actual radio which sits below the screen and partially behind the HVAC controls. I should have figured this since the CD slot was so much lower than the screen. Both radios looked again exactly the same. The wiring on the other hand had one important difference. I also noted that on both cars there was a unused coax port (not sure what this is for (red arrow) and both cars had a USB cable plugged into the back of the radio (green arrow). I don't want to get my hopes up but maybe this is the USB cord that other vehicles and Caprices in other markets have that goes to the center console such as on the SS and allows you to plug an auxiliary device in. Is it possible the standard USB end is just coiled somewhere in the dash since the PPV came with no center console in 2014 and up (no 9C3) or did they just cut it like the dash. Ill look into this later. Back to the difference between 2014 and 2015.

This is a pic of the 20 pin "X4" connector on the back of the radio. The 2015 connector had these two wires (white/blue and grey/yellow) in pin positions 5 and 15. According to the 2015 PPV shop manual, these are the pins for the video signal from the camera. Not surprising, I looked at the shop manuals for the 2014 SS and 2015 Camaro and the video signals were in the same pins 5 and 15. The 2014 X4 connector looked exactly the same but did not have these two wires.

My thinking is I can obtain the camera, trim, grommets, trunk lid harness from GM, make my own harness using shielded cable and run a new harness to the front and make the appropriate connections. I can either repin the 2014 connector to add the video signal or I have found some compainies that make a T harness to add video signal to 2013-2015 GM vehicles with Mylink. Still trying to work out how to trigger the camera either through the BCM or maybe a manual switch or a combination of the two. I tapped into this on the patrol car to allow viewing the camera when stationary in Park for officer safety reasons. I don't think I can just tap into the reverse lamp though cause that could cause issues when the reverse lights are flashing. Coincidentally, according to the 15 shop manual, the wire color for the reverse signal output on the BCM is green/white which is the same color as the camera signal wire at the camera and the same color as the wires going to the actual reverse lamps.

The main challenge for me is figuring out the software or whatever modules need to talk to make it work on the mylink screen. I'm placing a call to white this weekend. Part numbers/prices to follow. FYI, the factory camera has the grid lines that move with the steering wheel and can be turned off through the menu.

Got the parts to make this happen. Now just got to see if this radio will program.

92292247 F-Camera $185.25 (Factory 2015-2017 Caprice PPV camera) [Cheaper Alternative number is 92288994 from the Middle East Caprices, not sure of any quality diffrences]
92263704 F-Molding $80.00 (2015-2017 Chrome molding on trunk that had hole for camera)
92288951 Trunk lid camera harness $30.00 (Old Part number = 92254841)

The Camera snaps into the back of the trim molding prior to being installed on the trunk lid. The wiring harness routes the wires from the camera through the lid to underneath the rear shelf using factory holes and grommets so everything is sealed up properly. The only tool you need to install this is an 8mm socket wrench.

Pictures and more to come.

Got the radio out and shipped over to White Auto Media. In the mean time, I installed some of the hardware.

As we all know, this is the factory trunk trim piece for 2014. Its plain with no holes or markings. This one has been plasti-dipped.

I have installed the 2015 and newer trim piece with the factory 2015 up camera. Two different part numbers are needed, see above for those numbers. It installs easily and is self explanatory. Remove the old trim by removing the 4 8mm nuts and disengaging the 4 clips. Take care to keep track of the gaskets at each bolt and clip hole.

The camera snaps into the trim piece first, then the trim is attached using the 4 clips and nuts. These are sold separately but you can reuse the ones from the factory trim piece that came on your car. Looks like this installed. I painted this prior to install. It comes chrome from GM.

Now for the trunk lid wiring harness.

Open the trunk and look for these two grommets. One is on the trunk lid and one is on the body below the rear glass. (right side of car) Remove them.

You could cut the connector off the camera and do the wiring yourself to save money but I opted to buy the trunk harness since it was cheap (about $27.00) and comes with the rubber weatherpack loom and will look cleaner. The harness looks like this:
IMG_4784.JPG
IMG_4784.JPG (333.94 KiB) Viewed 24893 times
Start by feeding the harness with the small green connector end first through the hole on the trunk that you removed the grommet from. It goes inside the trunk lid between the outer and inner walls up and around to the camera connector near the middle of the trunk behind the lock cylinder. Inset the grommet end of the rubber loom into the trunk. Feed the other end of the harness into the hole on the body where you removed the grommet plug. Feed that end of the harness then install that end of the rubber loom. Looks like this installed:

Connect the green end connector into the camera connector. The camera connector comes with a clip. It installs into a pre-existing hole behind the lock cylinder.

Cut the end of the connector off inside the trunk and wire in your own connector, solder/heatshrink, butt connector or what ever method your desire. You could also get the other end of the connector from a salvaged car.

Next I will be wiring the camera. Stay tuned.

I wired the car this weekend. The camera has a 6 wire harness.

Blue/White - video signal to radio x4 connector (pin 15)
Grey/Yellow + video signal to radio x4 connector (pin 5)

violet/green 12v ignition power for camera fused at 10 amps per factory fuse block schematics
green/white to BCM reverse signal (could also tap into reverse lamp as long as they are not set up to flash)
Black Ground
Black Ground (video signal shielding)

The trick to finding which black wire does which is done by unwrapping an inch of the loom on the factory camera harness to see which black wire goes into a shielded cable. The ground of the other black wire is supplied to the camera and from the camera it returns a ground path to the video signal wires which are wrapped in shielded cable to reduce interference. It may not matter which ground is which but I have not tried to hook it up both ways.

I took out the passenger side floor trim out plates, b pillar trim and back seat. I ran the video signal in its own shielded cable up to the radio. I ran a 2nd harness up to my center console where I have ignition, ground and battery fuse blocks plugged into the factory power distribution using the Kerr connectors. This is how I got the video signal into the radio:

Use a small flat blade to gently pry this clip off of the 20 pin connector (X4) that plugs into the back of the radio (silver box).

This clip pulls off to service the pins in the connector.

I obtained these pins and pigtails from a salvage car. It does not have to be a Caprice, just any vehicle with the same connector so any vehicle with a Mylink for sure. There is also another company I mentioned earlier in the post that makes a T-harness for plug and play to get the video signal into the radio. They have it listed for 2013-2015 Camaro but Ive done the research and the Camaro gets it video signal through the same pins 5 and 15 as the Caprice.

Look at the existing pins in the connector to orient them. They simply just push in and you will hear a click when they engage. Put the clip back on when they are done.

Once I get the radio back from White Auto, I can will test and post the results.

Sorry for the delay, things have been so busy around here. I got the radio back from White Media awhile back and installed it. Everything works as expected and I cant say enough good things about White Media. Super great guy to work with. Camera works exactly the same as an OEM 2015-2017 Caprice. Thanks again to Chris for helping me with this project and for answering my many questions.

Great write up with pictures and info. I'm thinking I need to get a newer trunk lid for my 2011. I now that my radio is the older style, but, I have already had Chris White enable the video input and smwalker supplied me with the correct wiring harnesses.

Thanks really goes to Garner on this one. Truth be told I screwed up the original guideline calibration using data from an Oz market caprice thinking they would (and should have) been the same; I was wrong lol. Garner was kind enough to send it back a second time so I could get it right for not only him but everyone else and not having those guidelines be correct would have driven me insane LOL So yeah its all perfect now but it's all thanks to Garner :)
