I bit the bullet a little while ago and picked up cheap set of Rockford fosgate 6 1/2" speakers. ($40 a pair from Sound of Tristate)
Since I had a garage full of projects, and it was a nice day out, I decided to tackle this.
What I ended up doing was using the great plains area of the door panel to mount the new speaker and piggy back off of the already installed speaker. Now for the factory speaker (which I left in), I ended up drilling the little dimples with a 1/16th drill bit to make a makeshift speaker grille just to get the sound out.
Believe me, it looks ghetto, but I cant see it from where I sit! haha. But here soon I am going to remove the panel and either put in a small speaker grille or make the holes a little more symmetrical. Now, the speakers are nothing to brag about, they just put sound out, they have very little "thump", I was expecting something like what the front is like, but im just glad I have sound behind me.
All in all, it took me a little less than 2 hours (lunch breaks, watching the approaching thunderstorms, etc..)
BTW hit 10k miles last night! Not even 6 months of ownership.

Re: Installed Rear Speakers
So, I am checking out the speakers and holes, can you actually hear anything out of the factory speakers now that you drilled the holes?
And, any chance those new speakers are gonna kicked to death by unaware passengers?

Re: Installed Rear Speakers
Well, i have noticed some more sound from the upper speakers but I dont think its enough. Im thinking that I need to install smaller speaker grilles and/or replace the speakers with something better.
As for the other speakers, Im not too terribly worried about it. 1.- Theyre 29$ Rockford Speakers and 2.-I USUALLY dont have rear passengers.

Re: Installed Rear Speakers
Aren't those rear door panels rare or something?
