Post by cerbomark »

Does and computer shut off of the DOD correct the potential lifter issues?

46K and change miles. That's what our '12 had on the clock when the cam and two lifters were replaced.

It can happen at any time, basically. Our '10 Tahoe has been fine for 110+K miles, so far. There are some vehicles that never have an issue, yet others that eat lifters like candy.

Lifters seem to be a weak spot on the LS* line of engines. Even the 'trick' LS7 lifter upgrade doesn't completely guarantee you of trouble-free miles. DOD-delete kit install will help things a lot, but there are still no guarantees.

I wouldn't trust those lifters at all. Get them out of there! Anything can happen, and then you'll be left with metal fragments throughout your engine.

I was told by a tuner and former chevy tech that turning DOD off by tune does prevent the lifter issue related to the 4/8. Don t know but with a lot of warranty left I ll either leave it for now or grab a Ranger AFM delete device. I think the warranty on the engine is either 5/6 years and 100K.
Thoughts? That ranger device is now 140 new.

The failures on the first engines with DOD were the lifters failing to re-activate and remain collapsed. GM did some revisions of lifter design to correct this issue as well as oil consumption with a new VLOM. On these newer engines, the failure seems to be more of the pitting of the roller and damage to the cam.

While anecdotal, I don't have the vehicles right in front of me, or know their exact history and level of maintenance, but I still read posts of people who tune out or disable DOD on their vehicles (cars and trucks), and still have failures. So maybe they were already close to failure anyway, and even after the tune the things failed anyway.

If I was to do it, I'd just go with a cam and lifters (and probably springs, since we're in there), and then tune the DOD out.

Today I ordered the Ranger AFM plug in disabler. They stated that the latest version has no battery drain when parked for long periods and no dash light will be set off. Those were old issues that have been reported. I guess I ll be the test dummy!
