17x10 +44mm rears?

Post by cabledawg »

Will the wheels in the title work in back of a lowered /stock SS springed Caprice?

Will they "work"? That's dependent on a number of additional data points that are not known. Since you don't mention tire size, the calculations would be a guess...is this going to be for running slicks for drag racing?

Perspective: SS sedan rear wheel is 9" wide, with +57mm offset - and we know they'll fit with no issues.

Your 17x10/+44 wheel is going to be sitting further outboard by a full inch or more--1/2" (13mm) of added bead width PLUS 1/2" (13mm) of offset difference.

SS rear wheel: backspace is 184mm, outboard 70mm (254mm total = 10" bead lip to bead lip)

17x10 wheel: backspace is 183.7, outboard 95.7 (279.4 total = 11" bead lip to bead lip)

The 17" wheel will add a full inch--70mm vs 95.7mm (25.7mm more) to the outboard, which I believe will create a tire interference issue with the body opening.

Forgive me Bill... I am looking to run 17s all around. Square would be great, staggered works too.

If staggered, I plan to space the front wheels out to appear as wide as the rears.

Heres what I have to choose from:

17×8.5 offsets from +6 to +50
17×9.0 offsets from +12 to +58
17×9.5 offsets from +19 to +65
17×10 offsets from +25 to +72

Where are you finding all of these wheel choices Cabledawg? When I was searching for wider wheels for my PPV I searched for BMW or Range Rover wheels that are the same bolt pattern. That gave me several more choices. I ended up running a BMW wheel from Tire Rack with a set of DR's that I bought used just to make sure they will fit. Now I'm looking for a custom set of wheel centering rings.

The wheel I'm currently using is 18x9 +44, mounting a 255/45 square setup - the car has 4-piston front (Brembo) calipers, and while the back of the wheel clears the outer caliper body surface, it's close enough that I am running a 2.5mm hub-centric spacer. The wheel has a 82mm bore, so it was easy to fit the spacer for a nice snug fit--in other words, not a flat spacer, so hub support is covered, meaning less concern about lug/stud loads.

As mentioned, the SS sedan rear wheel is 19x9 +57, which is KNOWN to fit on the front, if you use a 15mm spacer--at least that has been reported as the most common setup for SS owners. The issue (beyond tire size choice) is clearance to the strut housing. My 18x9 wheel's inner edge is very close to the strut....which the 2.5mm spacer also helped. But that relationship is fixed--the real issue is where the tire may come into contact with the body or inner shield, etc.

So, the first thing to be considered is--with all of the wheel sizes and offsets you've stated as possible for you to use--will be impacted by your brake choice. The back of the wheel spoke profile is going to be critical as offset changes in a given wheel style/design, to ensure clearance between the wheel & caliper.

Stock tire diameter is 27.3/27.4, and the tire I'm using is 27.0/27.1 - SS tire sizes are all less than 27", so at some point you'll run the risk of having tires that look "lost" in the wheel opening, or the car will have been lowered to restore the relationship.

If you're sticking with stock brakes, there's more room to play, and since tire size is still a question, if the (17") wheel can clear the brakes, I'd still be concerned that going beyond 9.5" gets iffy--tire size and body opening massage, even at stock ride height will be on a collision course.

A good example for you to consider--(for offset/width reference purposes, since it's a 20" wheel)--would be the 2016-2019 Camaro SS rear wheel, which is 9.5 width +39mm offset. Some here are using that wheel, and reporting that it works "fine". I have a hard time believing that there's no tire-to-body contact at the rear, but I don't know about tire sizes or ride height in those cases.
