Headers w/o Oil cooler delete?

Post by HoldOn SV »

Are there shorter headers available that don't require an oil cooler delete? I just had my first stock converter failure, and it's over $1600 repair (for just one), here on the south FL coast.

Any shorty headers for the SS I would imagine would work for the Caprice due to similar oil cooler provisions. I think a few guys here might have used different OEM manifolds as well (Maurice I think used ones from an LS7 Z28? There may be others I can't recall right now though). Outside of those two options, I don't know that there's a lot available. Perhaps for the G8 there are some shorty ones that would work, but once you hit Kooks Midlength length, you need the cooler deleted. 1600 to replace the stock converter? Damn. 1600 dollars can almost buy you long tubes and catted midpipe to hook to your stock mufflers. Or just find a used converter here/G8board/SSforums or facebook if you are a member there.

Any headers for an SS, short or long tube, will work.

If your failed cat is the front one, aftermarket cats can really open up the exhaust from the highly-restrictive front cat. I'm running Solo Performance cats on our '12, and the difference in the pipe ID is obvious. That would be cheaper than the replacement OEM cats, and less hassle of installing headers. Granted, LS* engnes really like headers, but the factory manifolds will support a fair amount of HP. The restriction is in the front cats.

I am running the JBA longtubes for the SS and did not need to touch the oil coiler. They were pretty much a direct bolt in, only thing is needed a different O2 sensor with a little longer wire.

Yes. You don't want the 94-96 SS headers. While they had an oil cooler, the lines went up to the core support. Oh, yeah, and there's that whole, they won't bolt up kind of thing.
