I don't know the direct answer to your question, but I do know you shouldn't wire it like you have it. The inputs should only go to the amp and the outputs go to your speakers. I'd change that first and see if it cures your problem.

I'm not sure how metal shavings would get into the intake, but your pics look like road dirt to me. Maybe you're running a crummy filter or the filter failed, or the tubing.... Something is letting unfiltered air in there.

You can google search for places that repair automotive dashes. I'd sent it out to get fixed before I tried replacing it.
