So my '12 V8 PPV has a balancer problem.....it shakes a bit, and it's noisy. (86,000 miles)
A mechanic friend of mine, who owns a late 2000 vette, told me he had to replace his GM one twice and went with fluidampr the second time.
Are the GM ones known to be problematic?
Are harmonic balancers on these engines a problem?
Re: Are harmonic balancers on these engines a problem?
alot of people think they are a problem , more so than not its just your eyes playing tricks on you , while some do have a problem
Re: Are harmonic balancers on these engines a problem?
Mine is chirpping very loudly, while it can be other parts of the belt system, maybe the tensioner or pulleys, I'm pretty sure it's the balancer.
Does the radiator hve to come out for the balancer to be replaced?

Re: Are harmonic balancers on these engines a problem?
the balancer is a fixed part , not likely to make any noise , unless the outter ring is slipping
its easier to get out with the rad being out , because the puller needed

Check GM service bulletin PIP-4750-D/E for the 2011 & 2012 Caprices. This is a problem that dates back to the initial release of the Caprice. Mine on my 2011 was done under warranty. Also germane to the G8, the Corvette, and the Camaro - both 6.0l and 6.2l engines. Here's the linky;

The bulletin has an extra zero in the wobble tolerance dimension. The 4mm equivalent should be 0.157” not 0.0157” as printed.

And, here is the updated current bulletin - now it's up to the "G" revision. Covers 2011-2017 Caprice. Updated in June, 2020. I've posted a copy of the "F" bulletin on the site's files section that covers 2011-2015 cars, I'll have to go back and amend it with the G version. Public record direct from the NHTSA. Linky;

Well now... whoever revised this TSB was sort of dense - it refers to the "6.2 L77" engines we have. And the 6.2 L76's in the G8's. Where did GM hide those extra horsies from us all these years??? And, the typo is still in the bulletin Sanford. Incredible no one caught it.
