If your friend has a cam swapped LS2 that makes 420whp something is wrong. My Trailblazer when it was just a bolt on truck made 350 at the wheel through a 3600 stall, 14 bolt rear end 4.10 gears and sticky drag radials.

the compression ratios in the L76/77 is 10.4 , LS3 10.7 , LS6 10.5 and LS2 10.9 , so other than bore and having a very conservative cam , the L76/77 isnt that far off from the LS3

people have put LS3 cams into their L77's as part of the DOD deletion , and make close to the same whp as a stock SS sedan
There is a LS2 swapped Caprice for sale on here with a cam that is making 457whp and 422wtq. So there is certainly something wrong with your friends car. What I said was from my personal experience. Plus seeing the guys on TBSSowners.com that have done the LS3 heads on LS2 with a cam and supporting moss typically make 460 or so. But when compared to a LS2 with similar mods it had more meat in the midrange. The LS2 we built with the SDPC CNC heads on it with more compression wasn't even close to the 376 LSX. But the rectangular versus cathedral port argument will never be solved. It will rage on forever. Can we least agree that the conversion plates people use to put a LSA on a cathedral port motor is a bad idea?
