loss of power steering

Post by Nate68c10 »

Coming out of a parking lot today, I got the "something ain't right chime" followed by no power steering. These big girls are hard to handle at low speed with no power steering. It came back on and the lights went out but then they flickered the whole way home. Sometimes they flickered with chime sometimes without. I disconnected the three plugs on the rack and cleaned them with some cannon plug cleaner. I threw some dielectric grease on them and it is all good now.
My question is... has anyone here replaced the rack? I can't find any pics of it being done and I'm not entirely sure it's possible without taking the car farther apart than I want to.
70 years of hydraulic power steering working just fine and they had to go and muck it up.

Do you know if your car is eligible for the recall for the new rack? Or already had it done?

Was your car the one that got hit by a deer? If so, perhaps the shop in the midst of the repair didn't plug something back in quite snug enough or something to that effect?

Also, I laughed at the phrase "something ain't right" chime

It was, but it has had the power steering warning come on and off a few times since I've owned the car but its never actually affected the steering or lasted more than a few seconds. Also unplugged all the connectors and cleaned them with tun-o-wash and gooped a bunch of dielectric grease on them.
Its working for now but I'm going to order a used rack on eBay just to have laying around.

If you order a used one make sure and get the part number with the updated contacts otherwise you will just be installing a problem.

What is the new part number? I imagine my car should have it now since its already had the rack replaced?

Well might want to check to make sure the dealer did not pull a fast one. Part should be: 92289255

There is a pic in this bullitin that shows you where you can find the part number:
https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/R ... 5-9244.pdf

Earlier posts about the subject list 4 diffrent numbers that GM finds acceptable.
92288914, 92288918, 92289251, and 92289255

But i am not sure if some of those were eliminated along the way because they kept having issues with the contacts. Not sure which ones have gold plated and which ones do not.
