2014-2017 Replace Rear Wheel Bearings

Post by rcg530 »

One the last large projects for my 2014 Caprice is to refresh the suspension components front and rear (shocks/struts/bushings/swar bar endlinks/etc). I've already replaced the front wheel hub assemblies (very easy to accomplish), but I'm thinking I should replace the rear wheel bearings as well. Of course that task involves a lot more work than the front bearings.

I've been searching for a thread on this site or info / video showing the replacement of the 14-17 Caprice or 14-17 SS Sedan rear wheel bearings, and so far I haven't found any. I've only found the service manual info.

I'm curious to find out from someone who has performed these tasks just how difficult it is to press out the rear hubs from the bearings and the bearings from the rear knuckles?

I don't currently have a hydraulic shop press so getting those items in/out safely is my main concern.

Thanks!

I have never pressed a hub and bearing out of a Caprice. I have pressed more than my share of bearings and hubs apart on FWD’s. I don’t think you are going to perform the task without a hydraulic press. I maybe wrong, which won’t be the first time.

I'm getting ready to replace the rear wheel bearing in my 2014 Caprice.

I'm trying to make sure I have all of the correct parts. The rear wheel drive shaft retaining nut washer (number 1 in this picture) is something I cannot find the part number for in any of the online parts sites nor in the service manuals I've been using.

Does anyone have the ability to lookup what the part number is for #1 in this picture?

It's looking like I will have to reuse the original washers instead of using a new ones at this point.

I found there was not a separate washer as the parts diagram implies. The new axle nut itself comes with a washer attached.

Yes, everything else went ok. Trying to film it and do it was a bit challenging. I might get better video from the left rear since I now know what to expect. I'm giving my old body a day to rest before I tackle the left rear.
