[2011] Driver's side rear power window issue?

Post by dorqus » Thu Jun 16, 2022 4:34 pm

So I have a 2011 non-detective car. The rear driver's side window will only go up when controlled from the front. From the back seat it goes up and down no problem. I quickly checked the harness on the front where it goes from the door into the car and it looks OK, the tubing is still over it and it's not pinched or anything. It did use to work until recently. I'm fine to replace the switch, (seems that GM part is discontinued?) but won't bother if there's something else I should be checking. Apologies for any typos, entering this from my phone...

Did you pull the boot off of the door and the A pillar and take look inside the boot. These cars are bad about the wire breaking in this location. I have a small fleet of these things and I have had to repair wires in 75% of the cars. I have yet to have a switch problem in the 5 years of using them for daily drivers.

OK thanks Sanford, I have a three day weekend coming up, so I'll have some time (hopefully) to take off the boot and take a look!

I haven’t had one with that many broken wires.

How do I peel the boot off/back without cutting it/removing it completely? It's intact and I'd prefer to keep it that way if possible. Thanks!

So I peeled the boot off from where it goes into the door, did not see any broken or frayed wires as best I could tell. Also removed the boot from where it goes into the car, but it was just a bunch of wires all wrapped up in cloth tape. Is there a test I can do with a multimeter or something to see if the switch for the rear drivers side window is bad? It does seem odd that I can use the switch to bring it up, but not down (it goes down and up just fine from the backseat) (so probably a bad wire and not the switch) but just trying to rule things out.

The wires usually will not break under the cloth wrap. There are two little strips of rubber that are part of the boot that I cut to allow the boot to slip down the harness.

You have to pull and tug each wire as they can break inside the insulator without showing a break outside.
