6L80E trans difference V6 to V8

Post by JoeR »

Anyone know if the bell housings are the same on the V6 and V8 Caprices? I've got a chance to pick up a crashed v6 car for spare parts and I'm wondering if the trans could be swapped into my car in the even mine fails. I'm just trying to determine the value of the car to me. Even if it doesn't swap it would still be good for hard parts in case I scattered mine.
Thanks,
Joe

My internet searching says the LFX engine in the caprice was a 6L50e. The V6 Camaro's had the same transmission.

The V-6 car will not share many running gear parts with a V-8 car. If the price is right and you have a place to store body/interior parts, I would grab it. Needs to be of the same generation as yours to benefit you the most.

Thanks so much for the replies! With as much HP as that V6 makes I was sure it used a much heavier duty transmission. It never dawned on me that it might be different. This would make it a much crummier deal for me.
I don't really need much for my car currently, so I'm in no rush.

Thanks again for the replies!

Just to quickly interject, we've all had the wool pulled over our eyes for years. The V6 car indeed DID get the 6L45, option code MYA. The police spec guides clearly show it, downloadable right from our website's file section. I would have sworn on a stack of bibles that we had the 6L50 as well. Now I'm wondering how that disinformation made it's way into circulation in the first place. Verrrrrrrry interestink! I also threw a quicky update on Wikipedia because they had the 6L50 listed for the Chevrolet Caprice as well.

Good catch s/c'd cav!

Thanks
