3.6L Engine Message

Post by Backrower678 »

I have a 2012 Chevrolet Caprice with a 3.6L V6. No modifications
Recently, when I have run into town and have to stop for Red Lights, stop signs, or traffic a message comes on saying low oil pressure shut off engine.
If I slip the vehicle into Neutral or Park and increase the RPM's from 600 to 900 the message goes away. I noticed last night that when I parked to
get gasoline, car running at about 600 RPM's...NO Message. I have driven the car for 200 miles at a time on the interstate and no problems.
I have changed the oil every 5000 miles and checked the level just days ago. The police chief who had it before me had those changes done at a dealership on a timely manner.
Someone suggested a loose timing belt might be the culprit. BUT the engine only has 82,000 miles on it.
So, any ideas or suggestions?

Could it be a faulty oil pressure sensor?

I don't know this specific engine but you could get a scanner capable of showing live data and see what the sensor is sending as readings. You would have to replicate the conditions when it does it. Then the oil pressure should be checked using a real mechanical gauge, again replicating the conditions. If you have good pressure, you could go ahead and replace the sensor.

If there is an actual low pressure condition at hot idle, there could be something going on internally. This would require a lot on internal mechanical verifications. Could be a lot of things.

I agree with the idea the pressure sensor may be faulty especially if the car was maintained as well you say it has. I just sold my v-6 car with 258,000 miles on it and had no oil pressure issues

I also agree that there is a high probability that it is the sending unit. I had the same issue with my 6.0 caprice. Hooked a mechanical gauge in parallel with the sending unit to prove it out. There is a post on here somewhere with pics of the mechanical reading compared to the value from the sensor as read from the OBDII. I replaced the sending unit and have not had a repeat issue in over 20,000 miles.

Thanks for the advice.
I'm going to pursue the faulty sensor possibility.
Oh if I could get 258,000 miles I think that would see me out.
Again thanks for the advice. I'll let you know.
