Bowtie Color Change

Post by Z09SS »

Inspired by a friend, I painted my bowtie to change from gold/chrome to black/blue.

Where we started:

First you have to pry the two halves apart. Simple, but tedious. I used a thin nail-file to get between the halves and to cut at the double-sticky tape. Then Goo-Gone to remove the remnants of that tape.

A light sanding to scuff up the chrome and I moved to paint. The blue is Rustoleum's Blue Chrome. The black was my friend's satin-black left over from him doing the same thing with a red surround.

After three coats of color, I put on three coats of satin-clear.

Then you line the inside of the bow-tie with 3M double-sticky tape. And stick them back together.

Finally you snap it back into your grille!

I didn't go nuts eliminating every scratch and pit from the bowtie because I kinda thought it was better to have it still match the wear of the car.

I'm having fun and that's all that really matters with a hot-rod!

Looks good! I pulled mine off, scuffed it up, and sprayed it all black as a cheap “debadging” effort ha

That really looks good! Mine front and rear look like poop so this gives me ideas. Maybe a black bow tie with a blue line across it.

Bro that is SICK love the color combo now I really wanna do mine ahahah time to add it to the list. How difficult was it to remove it from the front / back of the vehicle? I have had several vehicles where they just glue them on and it's a pain to remove.
