So how bad is this - front strut issues

Post by dorqus »

Hello,
2011 PPV with 86k miles on it.

I was looking under the hood when refilling the wiper fluid and noticed that both front struts have separated from the strut mount for lack of a better term. Would explain the clunking even after replacing the sway bar end links.

I see this link

Do I need to replace the struts? Or can I just replace the bushings?

Thanks!

Thanks. Does anyone make a full complete strut assembly for our cars? I looked at Monroe, Eibach, track.com, KYB, auto zone, etc but no dice. Since I’d have to break out the spring compressor anyways. Might as well just replace the whole unit at once.

So looks like there are a few options for replacement mounts.
GM 92284577 - comes with the bearing and a bunch of extra hardware (washers, bump stop, etc.)
Whiteline W41772 - Polyurethane, almost double the price of the GM but will probably last longer
KYB SM5285 - about the same price as the GM, not sure if it's any better/worse than the GM one.
Also seems to be (but I can't find it anywhere) Lovells Suspension S41772 - did this maybe become whiteline? Saw something to that effect on a G8 board
Also the SuperPro SPF1590BK - also polyurethane for $236

Thoughts on one vs the other? While it's more $$$ I'm leaning towards the Whiteline of the SuperPro - don't want to have to do this again anytime soon!

Seems that I also need to replace the bolts/washers/nuts that hold the strut to the hub/knuckle assembly as they are meant for single use.
Also for the $12 each going to order the new "hats" from Amazon as the factory ones the rubber is all cracked on them - GM 92421208

whiteline comes with a needed washer , and nuts are fine the GM catlog does not list them as one time use , and in the 20+ years of dealing with the holden vehicles (gto g8 caprice ss) ive never replaced them

lovells was a relabled noltec i believe

i get allot of my parts through - holden parts usa

Interesting re the bolts and nuts. I see them listed as single use “stretch” bolts but that’s one less thing to have to replace!

Amazon has the Whiteline strut mounts for $195 but the photo doesn’t match. Might just buy it and I can always return if it’s not the right item.
